Learn how to wash and care for your kitchen towels, including screen printed styles, to keep them fresh and long-lasting.
Quick answer
Wash kitchen towels in warm water with mild detergent, avoid fabric softener, and air dry or tumble dry low to preserve absorbency and print quality.
Why proper care matters
Kitchen towels work hard—they wipe spills, dry hands, and handle messes. Without proper care, they can lose absorbency, fade, or develop odors. Screen printed designs, like the ones on Heartell Press towels, need extra attention to keep the print vibrant.
Common mistakes that shorten towel life
Using too much detergent or fabric softener can leave residue that blocks fibers, reducing absorbency. High heat drying may also cause shrinkage or damage prints. Overloading the washer prevents thorough cleaning, leaving bacteria behind.
Diagnosis: Is your towel losing its freshness or print?
- Symptom: Towel smells musty or feels less absorbent after a few washes.
- Likely cause: Detergent buildup or fabric softener residue clogging the cotton fibers.
- Corrective action: Wash with half the usual detergent, skip fabric softener, and add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle once a month to strip residue. If smell persists after two vinegar washes, the towel may need replacing.
- Stop or choose another option: If the print is peeling or fading after one wash, you may have used hot water or high heat. For future washes, stick to warm water and tumble dry low.
